Beautiful China - Day 1: Guangzhou

Yes finally down to documenting my China trip last month from 3-7 Mar.
I aptly named the title "Beautiful China" cos its coincidentally and most creatively, their tourism slogan. HAHAHA.

Ok so as usual, I did up an itinerary with all places, transport, and food that I've covered throughout the 5 days. So if u want to take a look, do email me and I will send the info to u!

Summary of Day 1:
Check-in at Paco Business Hotel
Tianhe district
Zhujiang River district
Beijing Road district

Anyway, the aim of this trip is to reunite with my bestie ex-colleague Liling in Guangzhou. Her husband was out-stationed there and thus she will go there often to stay. I travelled with our mutual friend Yee Han, who happens to be a guru at travelling. So all in all a pretty good trip, EXCEPT that I was sick pretty much throughout the trip. Ohwells more on that later. Pictures first!

We flew via SQ, and airfare was $380.20 to Guangzhou HAHAHA damn good a price.

 Mandatory Plane food shot

We reached Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and Yee Han proceeded to buy her sim card from a counter not far from our baggage claim area. I had bought a Singtel Readyroam data plan for Asia and rest of the world (cos I was going Europe later part of the month, more on that next!) at $35 - 1GB for a month. Had to say, connection was soooo gooood throughout.

This portion of the airport looked so pretty and futuristic!

We bought a Yang Cheng Tong card which can be used to travel on the metro at CNY50. That's the minimum value, deposit inclusive. We didn't bother to get our deposit back at the end of the trip cos it was a hassle - u can only get the refund from a particular metro station, so we thought to just keep it just in case... for next time?

Anyway, first culture shock of the trip: metro in China. Because the seats aren't separated like what we have in SG, u can pretty much squeeze in as many people as u want in 1 bench. And the Chinese seem to be very good at squeezing cos they would inch in even though there is only space for a baby. I kid u not. Luckily it was winter season and we are all wrapped up. The guy just squeezed and sat beside me like it was nothing. OK I have come to terms with this but I wonder what happens in summer when girls are wearing sleeveless and short skirts? hahahha...

We then took a long metro ride to Tiyu Xilu Station, which was just a 2min walk to our hotel - Paco Business Hotel (Tiyu Xilu branch). This hotel has many branches throughout Guangzhou! But I chose this one cos its supposedly newer. Indeed, the hotel was so clean, service was good, and design was modern!

After settling in and meeting Liling and her hubby at our hotel, we walked to Bing Sheng, a restaurant recommended by her hubby.

Just look at this roast pork.

BEST ROAST PORK I'VE EVER HAD.

Even the rice was good. But seriously, the other dishes were of restaurant standard but not as WOW as compared to the roast pork. It was a bit on the pricey side though but hey, highly recommended for their specialty!

168 Tianhe E Rd, ShiPai, Tianhe Qu, Guangzhou
Price: unknown, a treat by Liling's hubby

After a late lunch, we walked to the Tianhe district where a lot of the shopping malls are. There are some cafes along this area but we were too full to go in and thus skipped them.

I wanted to go to the LINE FRIENDS cafe and store and it happened to be nearby!

Like the one in Korea, there's this giant Brown at the shopfront and u have to queue quite awhile ( I think we queued more than 15min?) to take pictures with him.

There are many photo spots around the store and cafe, so we took our time to take with most of them. The place was so popular u have to queue most of the time to take pictures. But at least the queues apart from the giant Brown were very short.

Then we took the metro to Zhujiang xincheng in preparation to see the famous Pearl Tower.
There was a never-ending stream of humans hustling to and fro the metro station. It looked like what our MRT stations will be like during countdown or something. I've never been so scared of metro stations all my life hahaha.

And we met Yee Han's friend for dinner at Tan Yu at a nearby mall.

I was already sick at this time and partially lost my sense of smell and taste, but the fish still tasted good to me!

My friends were also full of praise for this dish.

Various branches throughtout China
Price: a treat from her friends so I really don't know

We then walked out of the mall and into the cold. What welcomed us was this amazing view of the city skyline, and the famous Pearl Tower within reach.

I recommend that u walk this route instead of taking the cruise along the Zhujiang river cos u can take many photos of the Tower from here, and its FOC!

That was the last I saw of Yee Han's friend and we went to Beijing Road after that via metro.

It was late and there were still many people along the streets here.

Famous sausage that I felt was so-so. Maybe cos I lost my sense of taste but well street food is still comforting!

After that, we were so tired that we decided to dadidi, or in Chinese, 打滴滴 using this app called 滴滴打车.

It is China's form of Uber or Grab as we know it. As u know, China bans Google, Pokemon, and even kicked out apps like Uber to have their own Baidu, Pokemon-knockoff game, and 滴滴打车.

It works pretty much the same way and is really cheap after converting to SGD so we used that pretty much throughout the rest of our trip.

That's all for Day 1.

Stella Wellness Centre

Went down to Stella Wellness Centre for a 90 min full body massage the other day; it was the 2nd time in my entire life trying out a full body one even though I've been to numerous foot massages.

The interior of Stella Wellness Centre was appropriately lit, setting the mood for customers to start relaxing and enjoy the session.

The centre offers foot, body, upper back massages. There is also free wifi, good for those who are doing their foot massages!

They have many massage rooms in the centre, and there were fairy lights in mine! I found the lighting too bright and they tweaked the brightness to make it more relaxing; coupled with the soft music playing in the background, one can probably fall asleep while having the massage! You can change into the kimono provided while waiting. There was also ahem, paper underwear that you can wear during the massage.

I tried their newest massage: "Emperor Massage", which essentially meant that there will be the movement of 4 hands on you, done by 2 massage therapists at the same time.

The massage therapists were reassuring and asked me if the strength exerted was enough or too much, many times throughout the session.

One thing I liked about the massage was that they could tell about a health issue I was constantly being bothered by - backaches.

My backache is so bad that my lower back hurts so badly even after a 2h-movie in cinemas. That's how bad it is.

The massage therapist said that I had many knots on my back and butt area (due to prolonged sitting, sad OL life), which led to the intense backaches. So she tried her very best to massage and loosen the back area.

I have a high pain threshold but it was still soo painful! But I like pains that come from massages very much.

They also did a hot stone massage on my back to remove dampness from the body. There are of course a lot of other health benefits from hot stones - they encourage blood flow throughout the body and promote deep relaxation, just to name a few.

I've been to too many bad massages overseas, where sometimes you would know that they are just going through the motion, and not really pressing on the right points? And then there are some foot massages where they keep massaging the calves instead of the bottom of your foot and toes?

I didn't feel that way with the full body massage from Stella Wellness Centre though. Every movement and pressure applied felt authentic, and that the therapists knew what they were doing.

There was a private bathroom in every massage room where you can shower before and after the session. Of course if you do not want to shower after the massage, it is fine too. I didn't as they had already wiped off most of the excess oil. However, I smelt like a giant walking rose (it's a hit or miss kind of smell) cos of the pink rose essential oil used for the session. Usually, they would use the normal oils for this massage but I chose a pink rose essential oil instead. They have so many different kinds of essential oils for the aromatherapy massage so you can choose the one you like best. Most popular ones are lemongrass and lavender.

Two things to note for every massage session:
1. Do let the massage therapists know if you are uncomfortable with the level of strength exerted anytime during the session
2. Drink lots of water BEFORE and AFTER the session

I forgot to down lots of water after the session and ended up with a headache. But my friend reminded me that one has to replenish with lots of water after massages and I gulped a lot down the rest of the night, and the pain miraculously went away.

I think massages are a very important part of our lives that a lot of people do not think much of. A bad massage session does nothing much except to relax your mind. A good massage however, not only relaxes your mind, but also brings numerous health benefits to your body. Going for massages consistently with the right massage centre will definitely improve your general health in the long term.

The fact that this place is in the east side of Singapore meant that easties like me could go there regularly. Tourists can also come down and try the authentic massages they offer since it is in close proximity with the airport.

ELLE Spring/Summer Fashion Photography Experiential Workshop

Once again, it is Spring/Summer season and ION Orchard has done it again with many promotions and events during Mar and Apr.

ELLE Singapore has teamed up with ION Orchard again to bring you the Spring/Summer’17 Fashion From The Front Row this April.

It's my 3rd year joining in the IONxELLE events and still as excited as ever, cos ION Orchard would also be celebrating their 8th year anniversary this year!

First up, you can tell from our happy faces I was elated to join the OOTD workshop held by ELLE. This year, they invited the renowned fashion stylist Furqan Saini, and Mediacorp's in-house photographer Kelvin Chia to share with us top tips for nailing great fashion shots.

If u think OOTDs are just about looking pretty, think again. It's time we all level up and take care of lighting, composition, pose, and even lenses! If you missed this session... wait for the one next year then!

The complimentary drinks and cupcakes we got.
It was my first time trying the cupcakes from Plain Vanilla and omg it was soo good!

Anyway, after their presentation, we were split into 2 groups and my group headed down to level 3 for a light graffiti shot.

Due to time constraints, we could only take a group shot. It took quite a while at the light graffiti studio as the photographer has to teach u how to control the light stick, and after that pose for the photo.

This was our shot. ahem as u can see, the light stick drawers didn't position correctly and the word overlapped with the heart shape. But it's ok, I'll still be going back for another shot when I have the time!

Afterwards, we headed down to the ION fashion garden at level 1 to put our skills learnt to good use.

Unedited photos:

And this one I had to tweak the warmth on my phone cos it was a weird colour at first, but didn't realise it was too blue until I saw it on my computer. (forgot to turn off the blue light filter on my Samsung!)

I'll need to go back again as the backdrop lights up at night! Think pretty fairy lights and garden all in one! Just look at the hashtag #ss17xIONxELLE on Instagram to see what the rest posted too!

There will be a series of fashion workshops this April - the Spring/Summer’17 Roving Fashion Masterclass, where we join the fashion stylist in visiting two fashion and one skincare/cosmetic boutiques at ION Orchard.

Thank u for having me, ELLE Singapore!

Till then, will update on that again!

Style Angel Studio

As my friends know, I have been fretting over my bleached hair as the colour has been turning yellower by the day.

I was looking around for a good hair salon and got to know about Style Angel Studio from Herine.

The lovely Angelina from the salon decided to help me with my hair issue!

I told her I wanted to do rose gold and hoped that the colour doesn't drop easily. Well naive me, cos Angelina told me it would definitely drop within 2 weeks, so she suggested getting blue and purple on the bottom part of my hair that was already bleached; and the crown of my head would be ash brown.

I was worried that it would not be work appropriate, so she made the colours slightly hidden underneath. See, its so subtle from the back!

What I loved about this was that the colours were very obvious when the hair is curled.

But not as obvious when it is straight or seen from the back.

Very pleased with the colours, OLs also can have unicorn hair too!

If you are skeptical about the colours fading easily, do not. It has since been 2 weeks and my colours are still there. Although I would have to warn you that the water dripping from your hair would be purple every time you wash. Just remember to use colour shampoo and do not deep condition and the colours will stay on fine.

The salon is strategically located near Boon Keng MRT. Just turn right after exit B, and turn right again to walk straight into the row of shops in front. You will pass by some cafes and also "Oh My Tian" cafe to see the salon. It is quite a huge salon I would say for a neighbourhood area.

There is a hook at the bottom of the mirror for you to hang your bags, and the salon is brightly lit.

What's more, I realised that there is free hair cut for seniors on every Monday

Yay goodbye to my horrible hair from before:

So in love with the new hair I have to show you a video:
